That quote in the article is directly from Herb Vincent. See quote below when Saban was hired. Bertman wasn't AD till 2001.

Joe gets all the credit for Saban. You couldn't be more wrong...

Joe wanted to give DiNardo another year, Emmert made the call and also found Saban.

You couldn't be more wrong.

Joe also hired Pat Henry who won a few national championships while he was here. I'm guessing that you'd be hard-pressed to find another AD with two hires of this caliber on his/her resume.
