'04 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer
125,xxx miles
it's the 5.4L V8 not the 4.6L (don't know if that matters)
every time i come to a stop it is idling very rough and sometimes it'll even shut off if i don't give it some gas when it starts shaking
any suggestions?

The PCV Vacuum elbow behind the throttle body has a hole in it.

dirty throttle body, 99% sure on this
costs about 5 bucks and an hour to fix
ETA: could be what mojo said but this describes exactly what my truck was doing, if there isn't a hole thats the problem

quote:the IAC solenoid is the compute controllled device that allows air to enter the engine around the throttle body plate when closed. It keeps the engine running when the compressor kicks on and when shifted into drive. It's possible the IAC is dirty but my money is on the PCV 90degree elbow. A simple spray with carb cleaner back there with the motor running is all that's needed to diagnose.

i think it's what MJ2 said cause i just popped the hood and i also heard a hissing sound like air was leaking
didn't have time to look hard enough at anything cause i have class but i'm gonna take a better look after class

we just changed the busted 90 degree part with an old 90 degree spark plug boot. Never had problems after that.
Pretty much sure Doorman makes direct replacement hose you can pick up at Carquest

Vacuum hose has a hole in it or has come off. I had an explorer with the same issue

I have the exact thing with my 04 F150. I was told it was my "Cam Phaser"? I do know my timing tensioners need to be replaced as I hear some slapping of the chain when it first starts up.
My truck would run fine until it heated up and then like the OP , when low idle it would shake and die if I did not put it in neutral and give it some gas.
I would really like for it to be a cheaper fix. I was told that the "cam Phaser" (whatever that is ) is like a 2500 job. ?

The new Ford v-8's are light years more advanced tan the old 4.6 & 5.4's

So MJ.. You think that mine is not the hose issue as was for the OP , but the cam phaser issue? Of sourse be hard for you to know exactly, but from your experience. ?

%100 of the hoses go out on triton engines. %100 triton engines make cam phaser noise.
I have yet to see cam phasers cause drivability issues. Just noise.

Thanks. I will check the hose it is right behind the throttle body?
Posted on 11/13/13 at 10:14 am to mcpotiger
under the IAC solenoid, behind the throttle body

Got it. Thanks for the insight. I will let you know if it resolves the issue.
