Haven't read the book, but having parts of your team's bodies paralyzed seems to parallel the sacrifice of part of the fleet in order to achieve the larger goal of getting to the other team's gate/the alien home world.

I understand this in an abstract way, but I was always hoping it was something specific to the way the buggers fought. It was such a focal point of the way Ender fought I hoped it was something more than a lesson in fighting while injured or thinking outside the box.

Consider how casualty adverse our society is with the current wars in the Middle East. The problem with war is that casualties are not just a side effect but a necessity. You have to be willing as a commander to risk the lives of your troops if you want to achieve the overall objective. If you are afraid to do that you get bogged down in a quagmire like we have done in Iraq/Afghanistan. Would Ender have been willing to sacrifice the transports if he knew thousands of people were really dying?
