I didn't know the .30-30 was around for injun blasting. I thought they mostly used stuff like .44-40

Back to the meat of this topic, the .30-30 doesn't make much sense as a 150+ yard deer caliber.

You can get a soft recoiling rifle that will be much more well suited for the job and you'll be able to get ammo from walmart to do it. The only thing the .30-30 has going for it over other calibers is that it is chambered in very handy rifles and it has a rich history. If it wasn't chambered in marlin 336, I'd never own one, and neither would a wholeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee lot of people who do.
