The problem is not scheme
Riiiii.....wrong. Chavis scheme looks great when he has outstanding athletes in the front 7. That isn't the case this season.
The problem that's happening right now is that Chavis is still running the same scheme without the athletes especially at pass rusher. Playing zone coverage without a pass rush is slow, smothering death even against an average QB.
Good receivers will find the creases in zone coverage & exploit them. The only way a defense can prevent that is to get pressure on the quarterback. This can still be accomplished even when dropping 7 into coverage.
Chavis has displayed a lack of creativity on 3rd down & his blitz packages. The only blitz he seems to use is Jalen Mills coming off of the slot receiver. Its predictable as hell.
The defense would stand a better chance getting off the field on 3rd down if Chavis would get creative in his presnap disguises as well develop some creative single LB, safety or CB instead of just blitzing the slot corner.
