It depends on the characters.
For example, I hated the "Butters's Very Own Episode" one, while most people loved it. But that's because I love Butters as a small, ancillary character (one exception being the Butters's Bottom Bitch" episode, which I thought was great).
The goth/vamp kids are better as small characters, but I thought the carried this episode well enough.

When the Butter's episode was new, it was fantastic and made sense to give him his own episode. It hasn't aged as well, but it was part of introducing him since he was going to become a major character.
