Yea its pretty simple, times are changing and the model of people going to games is too. More and more people would rather watch on tv and can you blame them? It's cheaper to buy an hdtv than it is season tickets. They make less in ticket sales but they do make more in tv now than they used to so it's not like the popularity is declining, just how people view it. I know some games are fun and you can't replace some memories at games but that isn't all of them, most are just fine to watch on tv.
