from what i was told, their roof "traps" all of the noise as it tries to escape. so, i think that the engineering has a lot to do their record.
This. Also the reason the Oregon and U of Washington stadiums are so loud. They have these metal roofs that extend out over the stands and bounce the sound back down toward the field. So any record in those places needs an asterisk. (Of course TS has a slight architectural advantage as well, in that the stands are pitched much more steeply (closer to vertical) than most, trapping the sound to some extent. Thank Huey Long, who had them built that way in order to accommodate the dormitories.

Opposite of Michigan's Big House. Quietest 100k people I've ever heard and I went for a game against Michigan St. that went down to the wire.
Its just wide open.
I really hope LSU gets some sound engineers involved with the design of the new upperdecks so we can plan to trap and echo the sound in more.
Some materials bounce sound better than others.

I flew up for the Saints/Seahawks game in 2007. The stadium absolutely traps all the noise in. It sounds completely different than Tiger Stadium.
