Which is why I have problems with the design runs & improvised plays that the Redskins use RG3 for.

The initial injury to RG3's knee didn't occur on a designed run, it was when the pocket broke down. A thing that could happen to any QB. The final injury that put him out for the season came when he fell untouched going for a fumble, probably due in part to the terrible conditions on the field.

Meanwhile Wilson, an even smaller dude, made it through the entire season with a fair amount of running without incident. And Kaepernick and Cam have been fine as well.

QBs don't need to run like RBs to be a threat. The don't need to put their head down and fight for yardage, which is where a lot of the wear comes from. The smart ones can get out of bounds or slide to avoid most contact. Meanwhile, dudes like Kevin Kolb get his ribs detached from his sternum trying to stay in the pocket.
