He applied and interviewed to replace Arnsbarger.
LSU hired from within and kept Archer.

people think they know things about coaching searches and candidates. they don't. pretty much nothing you read on the boards or the media is true. unless it comes from belowpar.

LSU didn't even talk to him

This is how it happened! Coach Arnsbarger was a good coach that hated recruiting. So Florida needed a new AD. When Spurrier applied. old Bill says, hire Archer. He is the best thing since apple pie. So old tricky Bill goes to Fla. and hire Spurrier. Archer looks good his first year with the last of the Stovall recruits. Then bam! The bottom falls out. And this set LSU back for years. True story, but most fans can't handle it. And Visor boy made it a point to rub our noses in it every time that we played.

Nine years ago, Spurrier was an unemployed former United States Football League coach after the league had folded in March 1986 and was interviewed for the LSU head coaching job, vacated when Bill Arnsparger left to become athletic director at UF.
"I couldn't even get a second interview," Spurrier said. "I think I was one of about 15 [candidates) they brought in."
During the initial interview process, Spurrier was bounced around from one Louisiana heavy-hitter to another, each a member of the LSU Board & Athletic Council's board of supervisors.
"I said, `What are we doing meeting all these guys? They're not going to select the coach, are they?'" Spurrier recalled. "`Oh, yeah they are!', they told me. I guess that's Louisiana politics."

Bill Arnsparger quit to become AD at Florida, so we needed a replacement. At the time, we had an interim AD between Brodhead and Dean, and he didn't want to make a hire as important as head football coach since he was just an interim. So, someone got the brilliant idea to form a FACULTY COMMITTEE to hire the fricking football coach. The players, naturally, rallied behind the coach they already knew, defensive coordinator Mike Archer. Several outside candidates wanted the job, including Gene Stallings (pre-Bama) and Steve Spurrier (pre-Florida). The faculty committee went with Archer.
Supposedly Spurrier was pissed about this and, once he got to Florida, made it a point to beat us as badly as he could every time they played us. There were rumors about his being stranded at the airport when he showed up for an interview, but that was probably just a distorted version of what happened. Bottom line is that we could have had Spurrier, but some idiot faculty members who didn't know shite about football chose Archer, which basically caused the downfall of LSU football for over a decade.

A close friend of Spurrier’s told me that LSU told him he had to wear a hat and not a visor………………apparently he has never forgotten.
