Can someone tell me if this is more likely a mag problem or a gun problem? The mag is a K920G if that matters.

Kahr Mag
According to this guy, it has to do with the Kahr design of using the slide release to load the chamber. Being that Kahr tells you not to "sling shot" the first round, it seems logical that the mag would be harder to set with a closed slide that would require you to "sling shot" the first round. As we know, logical doesn't always equate correctness. Does this mean there is no problem, just a learning curve to operating this model gun?
