Epplin points out that this plot formula overlaps with the "cult of self-esteem," which promotes the idea that everybody is special and should feel good about themselves.
Uh, ok.
Maybe he's talking about a real bad thing, but the way he's describing it makes it seem like a good thing.
You'll find that people who have low self-esteem tend not to be able to make themselves better or make changes.
High self-esteem is almost always good.
Now, entitlement is bad.
But high self-esteem is very far from entitlement.

Agree with this. Way too much truthiness in our culture

I want a participation ribbon for this post, even though it adds nothing to the discussion.
Oh, and if you think it is bad you are probably racist, even though I am white, because you probably assumed I was black when you saw how crappy the post is.

When did the cult of self-esteem start in your opinion?
I'm wondering because
quote:
The story echoes across many kids' movies today, like this summer's "Turbo" and "Planes." Both feature a protagonist who defies the odds and achieves the impossible -- what "Atlantic" writer Luke Epplin calls "the magic feather syndrome," a reference to the 1941 animated classic "Dumbo."
If Disney was doing that shite back in 1941 how much blame do you really want to put on movies like Turbo and Planes?
