This is very surprising and I am somewhat confused.

I suppose:

He will be making a shipload of money and is thinking about his long term future beyond soccer. He wanted a shot at the CL and and got it, Tottenham being better than Fulham. He already proved he was a good player in the BPL. He still loves Texas and the US, maybe the family wants to come home and be together now. Perhaps he wants to promote and add to the growth and development of MLS now. If you play in the MLS, it would be difficult to find a more competitive club and better atmosphere than Seattle. Finally, maybe he knows there is 0% chance of Bale being at Spurs this year and therefore Spurs has a correspondingly close chance of making the CL.
