It should work that way for the U.S. for the next couple of cycles, especially if our youth system improves.

I don't mean to imply deeper means better. We'd be lucky to have players the caliber of Donovan, Bradley and Dempsey at the same time ever again. But I look at the 2018 squad and see we have lots of players at similar skill levels, which is unusual for us.

We as a soccer nation have finally hit the tipping point I think. Thanks to MLS teams and US Soccer taking development more seriously, the days of 10 untouchable players and a bunch of regular dudes going to the world cup may be over.

Getting on that roster will be a fight.

What is slightly concerning is that we don't have a player of the caliber of Dempsey, Donovan, Bradley, etc in the pipeline, at least not one who stands out as obviously as they did.

Maybe Jozy... but that might be it.

That said, Dempsey didn't really develop until later, but Donovan and Bradley both had shown by age 20 that they were something special.
