The same reason people root for lsu and the saints...
And everyone has a particular favorite in case they meet in the CL

I've followed soccer casually for as long as I can remember, but mainly only the U.S. and Swedish national teams. The last few years I have followed the Allsvenskan, Sweden's top league which began its season back in March. HIF is my favorite Swedish team.
I've also developed an interest in the Bundesliga after having taken German language classes for the last couple of years.
My three main teams:

Rooting for a college team and a professional team is not the same as rooting for multiple professional teams.
Unless you are considering leagues like MLS and the Bundesliga on par with college, which then I could understand.

Bad analogy is bad.
But it's more like you have a favorite NFL Team yet you like/root for another team from the opposite division AFC/NFC
NBA = East/West
MLB = NL/AL
NCAA CFB = SEC/ all other conferences
Though your FAVORITE team will always win out over the others people always tend to find other teams that aren't direct competition that they can relate to and pull for ...

I see it more as having a favorite NFL and CFL team.

So you are saying ...
EPL = NFL
Bundesliga, La Liga, Serie A, & Ligue 1 = College Football

Randy, you're trying way too hard.

I'm sure many European basketball fans have a favorite team in their country and a favorite or couple of favorite NBA teams.

Is it fair to compare different soccer leagues to the different NCAA conferences? Although there are still major differences, such as promotion and relegation, that's the comparison I generally made to simplify things.

This is how I figured it was since they play each other in the Champions / Europea tournaments.

Don't hurt yourself trying too hard.

Ha, I knew you wouldn't be able to resist. In all honesty though to me it's stupid to have multiple teams. The dedication it takes to really be a fan leaves room for only one.
The only exception I can see is a European team and an MLS team because there is no way they could ever play each other in a truly meaningful game (unless you count the Club World Cup) and you are just making an effort to support the home league in your country.
Having multiple European league teams is shameful imo.
