A smart GM would trade rivers in that scenario. Then again, we're talking about AJ Smith. Remember how crazy rookie salaries were. He's too expensive to be a backup.

Okay, this is hindsight and unfair.
Brees was trending upwards in his contract year with a 1st round pick breathing down his neck, yes, but he also blew out his shoulder that year so the decison was made for them. 32 out of 32 teams would have made the exact same decision.
Its like me saying the Patriots should have drafted a TE last year because of the Aaron Hernandez situation.
