Best value that meets specs while achieving the lowest cost.

None of the cottage makers of 1911s could deliver the quantities the government required.

FWIW, Colt won the Marine Corps 1911 contract.

Exactly. The USMC isn't going to spend 3k per pistol by going with a Les Baer, Ed Brown, WC, etc. and they aren't set up to crank out that number of firearms. Colt is set up to deliver a large number of quality 1911's that meet (probably exceed) the minimum requirements of the USMC.

Slight hijack, but a Marine 1911 csb... My buddy buys a Colt Special Combat Government off gunbroker. When he receives it it has the wrong box as well as different grips and night sites. He calls Colt and they tell him to send the entire pistol back and they will refit it in the Custom Shop (the Special Combat Government is a custom shop gun). He says I'll save everybody some trouble and keep this one if you'll sell me a Marine 1911. Needless to say, he receives it next week.
