Not having a forward assist or dust cover were both design flaws on the first M-16 that were corrected on subsequent revisions. Can't believe they are selling these without these basic functions. A forward assist and dust cover shouldn't even be considered options at this point.
I say go with a Wyndham Ar-15. They are reliable and already have a good reputation in the short time they have been made. Wyndham was started by the group that originally made and sold Bushmaster now that their non-compete agreement is finished. I have seen them for under 900 bucks and you even get a forward assist and dust cover!

For just recreational use, I think one would be fine without the forward assist and dust cover. Wyndham is probably out of the price range according to OP.

Here's seven votes that say the M&P Sport isn't flawed and is in fact an excellent piece for sport and recreational shooting.
