Looking at the 2013 LSU Defense...

Talking heads say we are in rebuild mode, but I'm a firm believer that LSU reloads on defense. Think back how many bad defenses have we really had in the past 15 years? Malveto? In all seriousness I think we will see some young guys step up and be great players. Our Linebacker squad is deep and these dudes will be nasty on the field, Kwon Alexander is a guy that is rarely talked about that made plays all over the field last year. Barrow is a tackling machine and Debo and Tahj will be solid...
Looking at our secondary, I'm looking for a big year from Mills, dude has the potential to be a great corner, and as far as depth in the secondary Sandolph, Thompson, Thomas are untapped potential that will turn some heads IMO.
As for the D Line we may be a little thin, but I think we will have enough support from linebackers that we won't notice any fall off if any at all from the D line. Look for some younger guys to fill up our line...
All in all I think our defense will be a huge surprise especially for people that think we will fall hard this season. Thoughts? And

Scary. If we don't get a decent pass rush it's gonna be a long season.

Our starting front will be good though, Rasco and Hunter on the outside with Allen and Herron backing them up. Freak and Ego in the middle will be solid run stopping too...

D-line is going to turn some heads, I'm afraid. Fact is, there are better rushers/penitrators. The only difference is edge speed on the strong side, but almost everywhere else it will be better, esp. in the middle. If incoming guys can add depth, we should be fine there, if no injuries....

Lacoutoure and Gilmore should see some PT in the middle...

Scott on Dandydon had a really good write up about our defense yesterday if anyone hasn't read it or is interested...

Gets into the backfield very quick. Gilmore looks to be a run-stopper-type. Like I said, it wouldn't surprise me if our sack numbers go up.

I'm really excited to see Rasco off the edge, dude could have a big year...

The problem is not that you've had a poor defense in recent memory, per se. The problem is that with the lackluster, and fairly confused, offense you've generally fielded in recent years, you have to have a dominate defense to win consistently. You can have a good defense, hell, a defense that looks great at times, and still lose several games. A la 2008.
I'm guessing, and maybe what the talking heads are getting at, is that the defense will be good not great. You know what it takes to be in the top 5 in total defense? Its pretty tough. Unfortunately that's what the Tigers have needed to make championship runs.

Heres what we lost.
6 DL that all started games and all 6 had more playing time than anyone left on the roster. Other than Johnson its not even close. We also lost Aghreye who could eat up a series or two in each game.
Our best MLB, maybe ever.
Our best safety
Our best CB.
U can understand why anyone would say we are rebuilding.

If our new DEs can overrun plays out of control like Mingo, we'll be in great shape.

I'm hoping our secondary steps up.... They were weak last year....

You should have limited this to the last 10 years so as not to include the Lou Tepper defenses of 1998 and 1999. Worse than Malveto in my opinion. Even with Malveto and the interceptions from a RS-Fresh thrown to the wolves, we still turn in a winning season. 98 and 99, not so much and we actually had some decent offensive players those two years.

LSU knows exactly what it takes to be in the top 5 in total defense. What about Ole Miss?
I think what the posters are suggesting is that (like most years) most pre-season media coverage of LSU's defensive units lacks appropriate in depth analysis and instead focuses on a few "hyped" players that are either returning or have declared for the NFL. Then when the season starts, we all watch the coming out party of the underclassmen that most LSU fans were already fully aware of.
I'm not suggesting losing a record number of players to the draft is going to improve our defense, but you might be surprised that we have some talent waiting to play (as usual).

Pelini's first year defense was putrid. (Or maybe it was half of first year). A bad defense is way more frustrating than a bad offense IMO

Loston and Mills are still on the team.

No pass rush = coverage getting exposed. It all starts up front.

Not really. Jordan Allen has very similar speed to Montgomery. Both average around a 4.8 forty. Though Allen is slightly quicker off the snap.

Only concern I have is Welter at mike. If Barrow plays there I will be way more comfortable. If the front 4 can't get a consistent pass rush, Chavis will use different schemes for Kwon, Micah and possibly Beckwith.
Wouldn't be surprised if atleast 6 guys off of D make All-SEC.
