The Key to the Success of the 2013 Football Season will be 3rd Down...

I'm liking the fact we have an experienced, senior QB and a fresh OC. I'm hoping the combination of Mett, Cam, and catching the football will result in a high 3rd down completion percentage. If this happens, this team will be equipped to beat anybody.
The D will be plenty talented enough with the starting eleven to get the job done, even with reduced depth compared to last season, as long as they're not on the field for 100 plays. That's why 3rd down is so important. If we can average more snaps than our opponents, it could be a special season.

You didn't really give much of a reason.
Converting on third down is key to sustain drives. Even if they don't score, longer drives keeps the D fresh.
Holding the opposing offense on 3rd down gives us the ball back, and gets the D more rest.
As the previous poster says third down is the most import in football.
Your thread title is equivalent to the key to the game is to score more points than the other team.

I agree. I also think that the key to making it back to the national championship game is defeating Georgia. A few other teams have laughable schedules, so LSU would be much better off not having a loss this early. While it's true that the team could rebound and win out the rest of the season, the opposite could happen too. We can sit here and make predictions, but it honestly might not mean much if you aren't undefeated at the end of September. Assuming that LSU will be able to make it to the title game with a loss against Georgia, you could still have 4-6 tough tests (Florida, Ole Miss, Alabama, Texas A&M, Arkansas, SEC Championship) before you make it there. What are the chances that you'll make it through those games unscathed? Beating Georgia could do a lot of good for your team, especially if it's a close win.

Dear Baby Jesus, seeing LSU fail to convert a 3rd and 4 for like five years takes its toll on my psyche.

The offense has to step up. The D is going to take its licks early while new guys get broken in. Think the UNC game in 2010.
Not only does the offense need to score lots of points, but they need to sustain long drives.
The Tigers need to a respectable passing attack to make teams pay when they stack the box.
It is inexcusable to continuously run a toss dive into an 8 man front.

Yes...yes it is. That's the foundation of the point I was making. This offense the last few years has been mostly on the short end in 3rd down conversion %, total plays per game, and TOP while still closely competing for championships. If the number of three and outs can be reduced this season, I think this team can be championship caliber.

Wait a second. The key to the entire season is executing on the most important down?

Hey, there's no rule saying you have to get to 3rd down. Light it up on 1st and 2nd baby and you don't have to worry about 3rd down.
Basically the op's key to the season is converting first downs to keep drives going. Well shite, give Les a call now! We knew he was getting close, but it looks like he figured it out!!
