Not qute what i said, is it, Memphis?
Nor did I say or suggest he was not a valuable prospect.
But I did say his meaurables suggest he's overrated. And I said his speed is comparable to Mati Teo's.
Now, are you going to enighten the discussion by referring to freight trains or "closing speed"?

Look at Garrett's scores. He about 4.8 in 40, as was Teo at the combines. I see Garrett's press and his stars, just like everyone else. Those ratings must be despite not having exceptional speed. As I recall, his overall SPARQ #'s are not in the top half at Opening, although that is top level competition.

Sorry, guys. You can use all the catch phrases you want, but you can't "hit like a freight train", if you don't get there in time to make the tackle. And no one says the 40 is an end all, be all,as fantasized by one poster. Here's another old sports saying: "There's no substitute for speed". Garrett may be a very good LB, but his meaurables aren't supportive of his current rating. If he Notre Dame as his first choice, many here wouldn't give him a second glance.

So kevin minter was overrated? Terrell Suggs?
So a 17 yr old ran faster than a college senior? But he's comparable?

You're right Chavis is wrong. Chief loves the kid and thinks he can make an immediate impact. But you're right, he's overrated and has no closing speed. But yet he was one of the best LB at the opening. But he's overrated amirite?
0/10

He only ran one forty yard dash. During the Sparq championship, safety Tray Matthews, ran a 4.53 his first time and a 4.34 on his final attempt. A HUGE difference.
A LB during the finals ran a 4.7 his first attempt and 4.55 his second.

I love how some will break down a measurable from a kid and complain knowing damn well they couldn't come close to running a 4.8 even if they ran it downhill with Katrina winds behind them being pulled by a semi with a space shuttle parachute on the front of the truck.

Maybe you should start by posting times updated on 247 from The Opening.
And Garrett should be compared to his peers not LBs that were in the NFL or participated in the Draft, kid is about to be a SR in HS. Raekwon McMillan ran a 4.79 and Kain Daub ran a 4.87.

Thanks for acknowledging what I actually said, Memphis.
And thanks also for bringing up Minter to compare.
Minter was a 4 star and ranked 17 at ILB ( Rivals).
Don't know about his last HS time, but he had 4.67 at LSU Pro Day.
Seems that Minter actually supports the argument Garret's measurables don't justify his current ratings.

BTW, Kevin Sheppard is listed with a 40 time at 4.7, but has a low time of 4.6.
These players are faster than Garrett's best to date. Maybe he gets faster, maybe "Moffitt gets a hold of him"...
Point is, he has elite ranking, but not elite measurables.

Minter ran a 4.81 at the combine.

So for someone to be "elite" and deserving a 5 star rating you feel they should run a sub 4.7 at 230lbs?
He gets his elite ranking for a lot more than just measurables. Upside is taken into account. Football knowledge, scheme, tackling ability, etc. all play a factor.
I had a good friend that was a 4* LB out of high school and there wasn't much that I saw that I thought he was something all world that coaches would drool over. He played as a freshman at LSU and played all 4yrs with a stint in the NFL. I would say 85% of the reason for his success was how smart he was and how hard he worked. He couldn't catch for shite, wasnt the fastest guy or biggest guy on the field either.

Below,
Some succeed despite their measurables.
Manti Teo ran a 4.8 and contended for the Heismann.
In my view, FWIW, he could only do that at ND.
He would not have done as well in the SEC, either, contending with that speed.
Garrett's overall SPARQ scores were in the bottom half of those published at The Opening.
His non measurables, instinct, intelligence, work ethic, etc must be all off the charts put him at the very top.
Memphis seems to think they are.
I don't have anything on those data points.

hell look at jarvis jones. Dude is expected to be a starter week 1 this season and ran a "shitty" 40 time at the combine.

At the Georgia pro day. Which is kinda worse since most players have better measurements at their pro day than they do at the combine.

Clifton Garrett is a player I want at LSU. Very instinctive player with great tackling skills. His forty time doesnt matter to me. I think they run this without pads.....

How often is a linebacker running straight ahead? Lateral quickness is much more important.

I think CG plays a lot faster than any of these "measurables" show. I believe it was already stated in this thread that Jerry Rice was a 4.7 40 guy and I never seen anyone catch him from behind. CG is a straight beast. End of story.

Kind of off topic but.... Nitwit is a troll right? I mean his name, he always takes the unpopular view. I might be wrong here, but it seemed obvious to me and I was wondering why yall were even debating him.

Jerry Rice is one of those guys whose 40 times get slower every year....
It becomes part of the accepted myth.
Bill Walsh writes that Rice's 40 time of 4.59 was considered " marginal" by NFL standards. It was.
I suspect Walsh was in a position to know.
Oh, and it's true I don't shy away from unpopular views.
The bandwagon gets pretty crowded here....
