Even a slight weight loss (just 5-7 lbs) has been shown to improve blood sugar levels. Exercise is as important as diet...def agree w/someone upthread who tells you not to listen to everything a hospital dietician or "diabetic educator" tells you. I've heard alarmingly bad advice coming from those folks.

Too many 'fake' products (sugar substitutes, special cookies, etc) are peddled to diabetics. Shop the perimeter of the grocery store--if its on an interior aisle, don't eat it. Swap out white flour items for whole grain/multigrain versions (pasta, tortillas, breads, cereal)...
