Hollywood spends $10's of millions on marketing. It's a lot easier to sell prospective movie goers on Batman 25 than John Carter 1. You know what you're getting with Batman but have no clue what to expect with John Carter. You see it's a Disney movie so it must be for kids, because you may not know who John Carter is but you know what Disney is and does. That's why Hollywood does so many sequels and reboots. It's a lot cheaper to sell a brand people are already familiar with. Comic books have both established brands and built in customer bases ready to consume more content.
