In Superman 2 he turned Zod and his minions into mere mortals before doing any bone crushing and killing.

Which makes what he did in Superman II even worse than what he did in Man of Steel. At least in Man of Steel Zod was still very much a threat. In Superman II, he had been turned into a mortal being and was at the mercy of Superman. What does Kal-El do? He kills Zod in cold blood even though the dude was mortal and no longer a threat to him.
