Johnsons don't normally have those problems until their 4th or 5th decade. Is there a possibility the flow to the Johnson is restricted due to sugar or thick grease deposits in the lines? Maybe the pump is producing too much pressure damaging the lines? I know some guys will add nitrous to the fuel but that shite is dangerous and can blow up an engine with compression problems. You could have an extra bulb installed and manually pump the fuel to get things started just make sure to back off the pressure when you are done running the Johnson.

Wait - are we still talking about boat motors?

More so on old Johnsons. I have a 1958. Still runs like new. Just now and then it wants to spit.
