Can someone explain to me the origin or reason behind the rule in baseball where if the catcher doesn't catch the 3rd strike, the batter can try to reach first base?
Anyone?

If I remember correctly, it came from a time when baseball was more of a gentlemen's sport, so to speak. It wasn't considered good enough that the batter swung at a terrible pitch to gain the out. You had to earn it by making a good play, by catching it cleanly. If not, you had to either tag him or force out at first.

My guess is that catching the 3rd strike completes the play and the out. Its like having the throw beat the runner to first , but the 1b doesn't have to catch the throw....the catch just completes the play. That's my best shot.
