Starting the wire today
Congratulations. You're watching the greatest thing to ever appear on television.

What tips do you have or what should I know?
Watch carefully and let the storyline develop (don't rush it). Get familiar with the characters.

Is this a show that's slow and then gets good or is it money out of the gate?
I wouldn't say "slow" but it develops over the course of 13 episodes. It's real serious drama. Don't expect shootouts and explosions every 10 minutes.

I've heard some people say on here that through the first half of season 1 it was pretty average.
I was hooked from the beginning. Those that say it was average are either expecting something different or don't have patience.

To be fair my favorite show breaking bad started slow and I would have killed myself had I given up on it
I enjoy Breaking Bad myself but it isn't in the same league as The Wire.
Enjoy the series man. It's a wild ride. And remember, S3 and S4 are the masterpieces but S1 and S2 are critical to the importance of those two seasons. PAY ATTENTION and BE PATIENT. Every scene is important.
