“I think there should be some memorial to what existed there at one point,” LSU coach Paul Mainieri said. “Skip always talked about having something where home plate was. I think that people would enjoy that. There were a lot of great moments on that ground. It was a hallowed ground for baseball.”

Rabalais: The old Alex Box is gone

I completely agree. It is a shame that old Alex Box is just a gravel lot. I hope they do put in a bronze home plate whenever they finally decide what to do with it.

The best sound at old Alex Box came from the boom boxes the left-field lunatics brought. The used to play the 1959 Billy Cannon punt return at Ole Miss baseball coach Jake Gibbs (the punter that historic night) when Gibbs went out to make a pitching change.

Nice.

They already have a plan with what they're going to do with the property and it won't be a bronze home plate unfortunately.

Goosebumps reading it, thinking about the hours I spent there and the games I saw there

I went to my first game when I was 5, around 1990. My mom used to work the concession stand for our church and she'd get me in free. That was when I fell in love with baseball. I was there for all the world series years, remember the Armando Rios cheers, modeled my swing after Todd Walker, and seem to remember the song Happy Trails when opposing pitchers got pulled. The new Box is great, and I'm sure we'll make plenty of memories, but nothing will ever replace the original Alex Box. I still get a little teary (I'll admit it) when I think back to that last series against UCI and the way we sent the old girl out with a traditional 21 run salute.

I'm confused why they couldn't just upgrade the old box
