To be honest, the gods are to blame for all of this. People don't understand. The ancient Greeks believed the gods to be cruel and manipulative, and they arranged for all of this to happen just so they could jerk off to the drama.
There's an old Star Trek episode (the famous one in which Kirk kisses Uhura) that depicts the "gods" how they were perceived by the ancients. Their "faith" was an odd mixture of fear, respect and disdain.
I can understand why they were left out of the movie, but as far as the story goes, they are the puppet masters.
