Why Were the Lakers the Only Team Allowed to Wear Non-White Home Jerseys?

What let them have special treatment? At least now you see others doing it (Hornets, Pacers, Spurs, etc.)

They wear a light color the rules do not say you have to wear white just a opposite color.

which leads me to believe it was always allowed...so therefore no special treatment
