LotR is a complete trilogy. I think fellowship is the best but there isn't a clear cut progression. You can't say unequivocally that return > fellowship

TDK > TDKR

Empire>Star Wars >>>>>>>>RotJ

Agreed. Fellowship is my favorite of the three, but its kinda biased since I didn't know literally anything about the film walking in. All I knew is it had a wizard and it was fantasy. Had no clue it was a trilogy, and was expecting a super anticlimactic end, with Mount Doom being just across the river, and then the film just ends. I was pissed for about 2 seconds, and then realized it was a trilogy, which made me ecstatic. Still without question my greatest cinematic experience, RotK midnight premiere not being far behind.
