Anyone starting to think Jason Collins is a publicity stunt?

After hearing more people close to Jason Collins (this includes his twin brother and former fiance) publicly saying that they had no idea that he was gay, the whole thing starts to smell funny to me.
This is a guy that if you look at the trajectory of his stats (played in less than 50% of games in 12-13 [and only 2 out of his last 13], with less than 10 min/G, 1 PPG, and 1.5 Reb/G), he would probably be out of the NBA by next year anyway. He has no contract for next season and really should be considered a free agent already.
The details of of it just seem to me like this is a setup stunt designed to garner more attention when his career ends right after he "comes out".

Interesting concept. But no one will around here will want to discuss it.

Posted this in another thread just now:
This whole thing is a media bonanza. Biggest thing for this douche stick was not coming out but having a career beyond basketball. Hell, he's always going to have speaking engagements, he'll write a book, be hired by some LGBT advocacy group as a consultant, etc.
This was a money thing. Who care if he's gay. Coming out was a business decision.

He's gay, so he just wants attention. Terrible player.

An NBA GM said that he was 100% certain Collins would sign with a new team based on the lack of Centers in this year's FA class and teams' desires to have veteran big men at the end of the bench.

He graduated from Stanford, i think he would have made it without basketball.

It's all part of THE LIBERAL CONSPIRACY to make your kids gay.

The timing is ridiculous. Now that he's not on a nba teams payroll he's coming out. The NBA looks like the bad guy when no team wants to sign an attention whoring 35 year old who hasn't been any good in 3 years.

Are you implying he is lying about being gay or just came out at this point to try and lengthen his career?

If the Heat will pay Juwann Howard to wear a suit to games, some team will pay Jason Collins in the off chance they need a low post defender for a playoff series.
shite, Darko was still being signed this off season.

So he should come out in the middle of a season? He'll get bashed for the distraction.
So he should come out in the offseason after he signs with a team? He'd get bashed for the baggage he's bringing to the team by not announcing it beforehand.
So, when should have he done it that would have been acceptable?

It's also when he has the least to lose while the topic is a hot one right now given the Supreme Court...
It's a perfect storm for him.
He's not attention whoring and this isn't fake in any way.
You guys are ignoring or just don't understand the impact that his coming out has on others who are closeted, both adults and youth.
