I don't like either, and you didn't address any legitimate issue that I raised. That's disappointing, because I saw your posts in the Viagra/Cialis thread last night, and thought they were very interesting.
That's actually why I posted in this thread. I expect the typical accusations of being a "hater" and whatnot when discussing rap lyrics with people who are fans of rap. But, I thought you might have something else to say.
LIsten, I've listened to rap for the better part of my life, and still like a lot of it. I really like the beats and the energy of rap music, but I find a lot of the lyrics abhorrent and destructive to the black community.
I don't care if you like it. Knock yourself out. But, you're being deceptive when you try to attribute a deeper meaning to it.

i mean what do you want me to say, i like it, and think it's tight. i think his lyrics are a mastery of simplicity and cleverness, his take on pop culture is unique, if you don't get it, i don't know what to say.

Again, it's not that I'm not getting it. There really is not much to get.
I think you're not getting where I'm coming from on this. I already linked you the poverty statistics. Look up the violent crime statistics by race/ethnicity, then tell me if you still think it's "tight" to ridicule the poor.

clearly you aren't getting it, or you would get it.

Clearly this was a mistake to get into this discussion because it is going nowhere. You're not addressing any issue that I raise, and now you've just devolved into throwing out vague, redundant statements that don't really mean anything.
You like the music, that's fine. In HS, my favorite rappers were Project Pat, Three 6 Mafia, Playa Fly, Gangsta Blac, No Limit, etc. etc. I just reached a certain point (mainly when I started studying sociology) when the lyrical content started to bother me.
Maybe you disagree, or maybe you'd rather not think about what I'm saying right now and just enjoy the music. But whatever the case may be, clearly, you get it.
to you getting it!

I've never met a legit musician that took this kind of mockery of music seriously. Drum tracks and synth sounds are so terrible and its taking jobs away from legit studio artists. gfy

This thread was amazing and I couldn't tell who was being serious or not, but it really didn't matter.

The issue with this thread is the issue with most discussions/arguments. It becomes one side or the other. Black and white narrative. Either you like the music or you are a "hater."
I don't fit on either side. I've liked rap most of my life. But, years ago, I grew tired of the antagonistic, egoistic, misogynistic, violence-laden lyrics. However, I still like to listen to rap, especially when I work out. It's a sort of internal conflict for myself.
But, it's a scenario where, if you criticize any aspect of the music, then rap fan calls you a "hater" or says you're not cool enough, or "you don't get it."
Look at this clever retort from OP:
I'm not sure exactly what he's trying to imply. But, my guess is that if you're not into 2 Chainz, well then you must be too much of a square that listens to much milder, tamer music.
Again, pull up some old Project Pat. I haven't listened to a lot of 2 Chainz, but I really doubt he's going harder than PP was in the late '90s - early '00s.
Alas, rap fan usually doesn't consider any of this, and quickly makes a caricature out of anyone that doesn't laud the lyrics as they do.
It's the same issue with extreme nationalists or rabid sports fans. If you try to raise a legit issue with their country or team, the substance of what you say is disregarded & they'll probably attack you personally.
Black and white prism, ignoring the shades of gray.

Wow, you have got to be joking? Who could take 2 Chainz spot in the rap game right now? Don't worry, I'll wait. Dude is putting out hit after hit.

If all you're going to do is hurl subtle insults at me, at least come up with your own lines and don't rip-off your boy.

I'm not hating on 2 Chainz. I won't lie, he's got a few songs that i listen to when they come on the radio, but there are many other rappers that are far superior and get a fraction of the recognition they deserve.

So you directly correlate mass popularity with the best talent?
Interesting.
Interesting.
