More like Shanle 5.0, new and improved. Shanle only had 17 tackles for loss during his whole time at Nebraska. Thomas averaged 12.5/year. In total he had 51 TFL versus Shanle's 17, a 100% difference. Shanle had 6 sacks in 3 years. Thomas had 27 in 4 years. Another difference of a 127%. Thomas had a MUCH better college career. Not saying he will mimic that in the pros. Still if he's only twice as good as Shanle at his prime, we could have a pretty damn good value for an UDFA
Thanks for bringing some perspective. Clearly Thomas was a much more productive player. Clearly, however, there is a reason he fell so far and wasn't drafted.
The reason why I'm excited though is that Chase Thomas should provide quality depth. I like our top 3 OLB, but we have no depth at OLB. I fully expect Chase Thomas can be solid depth at the position. That is more than you can usually expect out of an UDFA

Happens every year. Might motivate him even more, especially since his hometown team passed on him.

He waited in vain at his home in Atlanta on Saturday for his number to be called. "It happens," he said shortly after the draft ended. Asked how he felt, he said, "Pissed off." He said he couldn't speculate on why he wasn't picked. His slow 40-yard time of 4.87 seconds at the Indianapolis combine probably turned some teams off, but, according to NFL Draft Scout, an online service that rates prospects, Thomas is an "overachiever with strength and smarts" who was expected to go in the third or fourth round.
I don't care about the 40 yard dash time. It's an overrated measure. Some pretty good players have ran slower times.

There was probably a reason Pierre Thomas fell so far too, but he's done well for us.
