I think the 410 tackles since 2009 is more an indictment of our front seven and not necessarily how good he his. Frankly, I think he's a poor tackler. He misses a lot of tackles but the stats might not necessarily show "missed tackle", he just takes poor angles to the ball and doesn't have the speed to make up for it.

As for his coverage, that's the definition of DB. He needs to be able to cover. If not, he's exposed, he's the weak link. There is no way to avoid having him one on one with a TE with all the two tight end packages in the league now.

I'm not hating on the guy, I'm not blaming him for the arse suckage of the defense. I'm saying its a spot that could use upgrading. In today's NFL, there shouldn't be a big difference between the strong and the free. Its a pass happy league and the strong has to cover just like the LBs have to have coverage skills now too. The league is closer to flag football today than it is to the NFL of the 60's.

Why can't we move Jenkins to strong and draft a free? Or play IAQ at free? Or convert White?

The team flat needs an upgrade of athleticism on defense.

So you're saying he's Malcolm Jenkins because Jenkins can't catch either.

After being steadfastly against trading up, that really wouldn't bother me. I just want a playmaker

I didn't want to start a shitty thread, but in a friend of a friend of CSP kind of way, I heard this is what they were looking to do.

We have enough slow safeties. Don't see why we would need one more.

I don't see S as a big need. IAQ proved very viable at FS when in. We're another year away from finding a Malcom Jenkins replacement IMo

well if he's viable then why would we be looking for a replacement? Why not just go with IAQ?

Sorry I worded that a little oddly. I meant that this year is make or break for MJ IMO. IAQ has already come in and played well. If anything the only thing we would need is depth when Jenkins gets shipped off. Harper will play more in the box which I'm fine with and I like the Lenhord acquisition. That would just seem like overkill to me. Improving the front 7 will make the back 4 look infinitely better.

Look at the Jets with Revis and Chromartie. Two of the best corners in the game and they've been terrible. Then look at the 49rs and how great their defense was the last two years. When Justin Smith goes down and Aldon Smith can't get to the QB, look how badly Matt Ryan and Joe Flacco torch their asses in the playoffs. It's all about getting after the QB.

yep...in fact I'll go a step further.

It's all about being able to get to the qb once your offense gets you a lead. If we could do that we would be in great shape. I'm actually a big fan of older, smarter safeties who have been in the league awhile and have seen it all. It's worth the trade off in athleticism. I really wish we could get a savvy vet to have our back half in the right place at all times.

Word around Dutchtown is that Eric Reid is drawing a lot of attention from SF. They may not want to trade up.
