I truly believe they are, but when an exchange holds almost 80% of the current trade volume, and smaller exchanges are closing left and right, it's hardly a "free market" when the only other game in town is even more unproven and untrustworthy.

That 80% stat is from 2011. I don't think it's true anymore, however, I will grant you that MtGox probably does still maintain a majority of exchange volume.

That being said, you can take this to the bank: The next 2 years are going to see an explosion of bitcoin exchanges open up. And that's because the free market is responding to the shitty service that MtGox provides.
