I get the feeling that he needs her to help his younger self...she is the "chosen one" for lack of a better description. He wants the future to change. The nightmares that she had appear to be related to her "preparation" or training for that very thing and her trip to the past.
But, I've definitely been wrong before and we are just starting the season...
