what is the coast like up there and how far is it from downtown Portland? Beaches? Surfing?

The beach is where they filmed the movie "The Goonies".

Oregon coast is phenomenal. Some nice towns (Seaside) and beaches (Cannon Beach)
Much of the coast is mountainous, like it is up here.

I'm not the biggest fan of the coast but I go for certain purposes like crabbing and clamming. I've read stories about the winter surfing. I guess we get some huge waves. Water is cold as hell so you need a wetsuit year round regardless.
