so you do you know that operating income, while a measure of profitability, is not a measure of profit?
It's, rather, a measure of profit from operations. So, when you spend a dollar, does it help you make more than a dollar.
There is more to profit, like interest and taxes, which are EXCLUDED from the operating income calculation per force. Depending on the accounting, depreciation and amortization may have entered in.
Remember the loans mentioned above? Shinn was up to his ears in loans from the NBA and they cut him off. His interest payment killed his profit. That's one reason Chouest upped his stake: Shinn sold a part of the team to him to get over the interest hump.
And that's just the Hornets.
The NBA as a whole lost money because most franchises lost money, not the NBA office.
Again, you can toss out things that are true, but they are not the truths you want them to be.

This is beyond my knowledge (HT accounting gurus assemble) but I remember several reports during the lockout of teams claiming losses when there really were none. Tax purposes, I believe. Even the $300million number the NBA threw out was disputed by reputable sources.
That said, I do think Benson is taking a bath this season.
I also do know (I saw the numbers) that $1million per game stadium revenue was a very good number for this franchise around 2008.
