I don't believe that to be true. Two of my buddies tore their Achilles playing softball. Both guys said it didn't really hurt. They felt like they got kicked in the back of the leg. They didn't even know what happened until they tried to walk and their foot couldn't move up and down.

Depends on if we're talking partial or complete IMO. I only saw one as a trainer (complete) and the guy was in significant pain not just at the point of injury but in repair and rehab. If it's a complete tear they essentially have to run a hook up into the back of your leg and pull it back down to sew it back together.
