it is possble that prometheus 2 (hope they get a better title than that) clears this confusion up while being a fricking awesome movie making the original even better. Maybe they had all of this shite planned from the beginning
not holding my breath though

don't listen to Freaux. you leave that Howard The Duck poster up in your bedroom. he can't change you!

all of the people shitting on it will probably say that they like John carter, immediately invalidating their opinion on science fiction.
Really? I liked both movies.

prometheus 2 (hope they get a better title than that)
Prometheus 2: The Secret of the Goo
Engineering 2063
Prometheus: Resurrection
then, of course, Promethreeus (Prome3us)

Prometheus discovered fire so who is the first guy to use it to burn down a school? That's your title.

quote:i was thinking more along the lines of this: The mightiest power is primarily led by DAVID (Eva Green), the vengeful commander of the XENOMORPH navy, who is second in command to the mortal-turned-god leader SPACE JOCKEY. She has the added incentive of seeking to settle a blood score against the HUMANs who killed her family when she was a child.

i like my boring science fiction as much as the next guy. seriously i do, but I'm still going to love blade runner, empire, aliens. They don't get into the science of ANYTHING. well except how the aliens reproduce.
It's not about "getting into the science," and showing formulas or scientific analysis. It's about being clear with what the rules are.
Science Fiction is particular in that it has to make OUR world seem familiar and new at the time by allowing for some specific element( or elements) to change it.
Blade Runner, boring or not (and I think it's brilliant), does exactly that.

Suggestions
Dunno about a whole movie, but a ringer pitch for Robot Chicken and obvious Simpsons nod would've been.
Technician: "Well, here's your problem, this robot's set on DICK"

The biggest rule for me in science fiction is having it be relatable. Ill take this small moment in ESB as an ecxample. The falcon powers up, then immediately starts powering down, Han bangs the panel, boom problem fixed. Is it realistic? No. Is it relatable to people of this time and planet? Yes. That's why I harp on the costumes in sci fi movies. You got to keep it relatable and connected to us. I think Prometheus succeeds at this level and that is what I think you're talking about here
In the end I do agree that the ooz should've been explained. That was 98% of what I didn like about it. Vickers comprising 1.5% and nitpicks the rest

I definitely would not categorize blade runner as boring sci fi. I want to clarify. Star Trek is but I like that too
Blade runner is a detective thriller set in the future with noire flair

This seems at the micro-level though. Why is Han banging his hand on the pamel relatable to the time and planet? Because it's dirty and broken too? That's just artistic consistency... micro-level.
Movies have to do it at a macro-level as well, Prometheus doesn't.

The devil is in the details, they just skimped on them regarding the ooz and it keeps Prometheus from being great. Doesn't make it a piece of poo

Like I said before to each his own. For me, it undermines the entire intention of the genre itself to leave something so open and problematic. There's a difference between openness and a gaping plothole.
Therefore, poo.
Also, your comment was that someone who liked John Carter has an invalidated opinion about science fiction. Them's fightin' words.

Seriously? Everyone has done that at some point. It even worked on my Xbox 360 quite a few times.

I say that because I can't reconcile hating Prometheus and liking JC. I'm actually just shocked someone likes JC
