Oregon might be a good option for you. There are two very different side of the state....west of the cascades (wetter, cooler summers) and east of the cascades(hotter and drier). It's beautiful like CA, great outdoors action and not quite as liberal as CA. (psst...stay away from CA, it'll make you crazy)

Yeah. Willamette Valley is mild, East of the Cascades is more temperate but dry. Bend has access to high desert and the Cascades and over 300 days of sun.
