It's for city pride, state pride, etc. Just sports. I live in Webb City,MO(Joplin). My daughter goes to school here. We've won 11 state titles in 4a, 3 in a row counting this year. I didn't graduate from Webb City High but I'm a fan of the team. I support the school district, go to school functions, etc
No different for college, people cheer for their home state team or major team in their geographical area.
