Either one, the 6121 is good for up to 172Mbps while the 41 is up over 300. For his use either would be fine, a matter of $65 vs $90.

The issue is the bandwidth per channel. In a neighborhood full of other cable subscribers your bandwidth will never fully saturate a single channel, especially during peak usage. Docsis 2.0 uses a single channel, up to 43mbps, and Cox pushes distributed bandwidth through 8 channels, so if he's paying for 100 and getting 18 down on a docsis 2.0 modem, there are enough people on the node to bottleneck the bandwidth per channel. Otherwise, he'd be getting closer to 40-ish. 4 downstream channels would net him 72 mbps under those same conditions. 8 downstream channels would get him the full 100.

Oh for sure, but that's also why I said for his use, where the 70-80Mbps he'd pull would be more than enough (especially if he's going to downgrade his plan like he said, then it's a no brainer).
