Since I've been mining, most of my gaming has been on a single 7970 (GHz) at 1440p (it trades blows pretty well with the 770) . For the newer games, you essentially have to run everything on high (not ultra) and use FXAA to get 60fps. For shittily coded games, you'll probably have to turn off/down a few other little eyecandy features.

Yeah, but for just $100 more you get 72% the performance of 2x680/770s in SLi.
Not only that, for games which are terribly optimized for SLi or do not have an SLi profile yet, you will be set with a single card solution.
Yes you can run 1440 @ Ultra w/ eye candy off, but there will be the bad coding and AAA titles where the GK104-400 compared to the GK110-300 will get shtt on.
If you are spending the money on a display, spend the money on the GPU. It is just $100 more.
