The responses here will be nearly unanimous in saying you should build it yourself. They may even pick out some parts, while most will give you vague direction to pcpartpicker, tom's, and newegg.
Your budget will be too low and your expectations will be too high.
If you do decide to buy parts and build it yourself, you will deviate slightly from people's suggestions and probably make a mistake that will cost you quality/performance.
This won't be revealed until you begin your build and post a new thread asking for help.
The response posts will, again, be too broad and more self-indulgent than helpful to a novice.
To skip all that, please build the PC with in-person supervision or order from ibuypower.com
Thanks Gimmie and ILike. Those are good places to start.
I want to stay around $1000. I think I want a moderate graphics card (like NVIDIA GTX660 or even GTX690 if possible). I just need the horsepower to drive it right.

id reccomend getting an AMD FX-8350 4.0 ghz processor
am3+ socket motherboard
16 gigs of 1600 or 1800 ram
This is the required horsepower your desire for a cost effective gaming beast. JMO
regarding gpu, look up some benchmark results. You can google "graphic card benchmark tests" or any other type of word combination that is similar in nature and find lots of charts showing best cards for the price. you can even find results for specific games if you have some in mind
