In the ORIGINAL film, he DID show up to just frick shite up. There were no opponents like Mothra, Ghidirah, the Smog Moster or Mecha-Godzilla. For whatever reasoning, Toho decided to turn Godzilla into basically a "Saturday morning kiddie cartoon" and brought in all the WWF like adversaries. With each new successive sequel, the Godzilla costume became more cartoon like too, until it was just too over the top silly.

BTW, he's supposed to be a nuclear irradiated Marine Iguana. I always wondered what happened to all those other MI's. Seems there should have been thousands of Godzilla's created from the radiation. Why only one?

I liked the 98 film, except for the ending and the fact that they made Godzilla a little too nice. Gotta have that radiation breath going on there fellas. Doesn't surprise me though, since it was done by the same idiots that totally
ruined "Independence Day" with a ludicrous finale.
