There is a pretty direct tie in here...

The Byrds influence was way more the sound than anything, they could've covered Sinatra (ok, may be a reach)..

I dont think he's doubting the influence of Dylan, rather speaking specifically of the Byrds...

they had no problem modernizing a 40s wartime song. LINK
bet they woulda killed doing a sinatra.

gene clark never gets the credit he probably deserves too. splits to do a solo country-rock record while the byrds release some average records, sees his career go nowhere, only to watch the byrds snag parsons and release sweetheart of the rodeo. had to suck.
