That's humbling for older guys. Believe me. I turned 30 less than 2 months ago and my father's pushing 70. They hang on to old athletes and old actors and past times like mother's milk. Nothing to resent really. Just the way it is.
I don't resent it, but don't expect me to not point out the huge flaw in their line of thinking. I turn 30 next year, fwiw.

Yea...the quality of a black and white television is just as comparable to a flat screen HDTV...
It was the best for the time period. Everyone in the field has access to the same equipment, thus the playing field is leveled for superior skill to take over.
Now if someone was trying to compare Tiger and Jack both shooting 64 in their primes on the exact same course and layout, then equipment is a factor. But for the purpose of GOAT discussions, equipment is irrelevant.

I see that as obtuse, but we all have our opinions.

the new equipment is more forgiving and easier to hit straight. i guarantee you that tiger wishes everyone was hitting with hickory shafts and feather balls.

And courses are longer and more challenging now. Also, I'd LOVE to see Tiger go all out with a hickory shaft.

Feel free to disprove my logic.

So by this, you've just admitted that more people can win a tournament today compared to when the equipment was not as good. Which therefore makes Tiger's run more impressive.

Does it really matter how forgiving equipment is when every pro has wear marks like this.

yes. that is exactly what i am saying.

Do you legitimately not see how ignorant that is? I'm not going to explain myself if you aren't serious.

My next 8 iron will look like that.

Refute this. I don't think you can.

This too.

you can miss the center of the club face and still hit a good shot with today's equipment. if you missed the center of the club face with the old equipment, you were screwed.

How does that refute my statement exactly?

superior skill is diminished.

It's not about the majority, it's about the one you miss that doesn't fly off the planet or land 80 yards short

What are you even talking about?
Everyone has access to the same high tech equipment for a given time period. Therefore there is no equipment advantage when comparing Tiger's run with Jack's run. Tiger uses the same equipment his competitors use, and Jack used the same equipment his competitors used.
Anyone arguing that Tiger's run is somehow diminished because of equipment advances is most likely retarded.

i'm arguing that it is more impressive because less talented players are capable of winning. a guy can miss a shot and still get away with it.

Tiger's status as the best amateur golfer ever (shout out to bobby jones) is what makes him the GOAT already IMO. I don't count his us amateur titles as majors but they are not second rate titles and I do put them in their own category of achievements to be compared.
