The only reason black face was racist was because it meant that people thought blacks weren't qualified to play themselves in productions. Just dressing up as a black person and using blackface is not racist by the words definition. However as a rule of thumb, never paint your baby.

black face actors played the roles of blacks to make them look stupid and slow
